Sustainability & SR

The Global University of Science and Technology (GUST) proudly applies sustainable development across its activities.

Consistent with our mission, we are honored to be a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which legally requires us to create a meaningful, positive impact on society. Becoming a PBC allowed us to formally embed our mission into our legal structure. Since then, we have been recertified every two years. Through this certification, we bring transparency and accountability to fulfilling our role as a leader in social responsibility, and continue our commitment to not only be the best in the world, but the best for the world.

B-Corps are organizations and institutions that provide a public benefit and embrace the highest levels of commitment to social responsibility. Every two years, B Corps are certified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

We recognize that meeting sustainable development objectives is crucial to our students, our planet and ultimately our future success.

The GUST takes a strategic approach to sustainability, focusing on areas that reduce our negative impacts and continually improve our ways of working. Applying sustainability principles in our estates and operations allows us to operate our campuses efficiently and responsibly. This optimizes resource use, minimizes spend and ensures compliance and has, for example, enabled us to reduce our energy and waste generation.

We tackle sustainability from every angle; decreasing the University’s carbon footprint, promoting green research and education, implementing recycling programs and raising public awareness.

The GUST is supporting academic research to address climate change and green economy, but we also know it’s just as important to create a sustainable environment at home. We also work to integrate sustainability into our teaching and research, and work with our staff, students and our wider community to help raise awareness and drive behavioral change. This is particularly important as the decisions and actions we take as individuals collectively contribute to our overall impact on the environment and society as well as the University’ running costs.

Our Annual Sustainability Report provides details of improvements, actions and recommendations for staff and students to help take action towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
