Program Overview

The Doctorate by Published Work is a prestigious degree awarded for the submission of a portfolio of published research to the standard of a regular Doctorate. This program is designed to recognize the significant contributions of individuals who have already made substantial research contributions in their field.

Professional Doctorate by Publication or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by Published Works - If you have published a significant number of books or peer-reviewed works, such as  books in engineering, business and psychology, you may qualify for a Doctorate by Publication (sometimes called a PhD by Published Works or PhD by Prior Output). This route is offered by the Global University of Science and Technology (GUST), typically requiring that your published works demonstrate original and substantial contributions to the field of study.

General Requirements for a Doctorate by Publication:
1. Substantial Published Work: High-quality publications in the form of books, journal articles, or equivalent works.
2. Research Contribution: Evidence of your contribution to advancing knowledge in the field.
3. Affiliation or Application: Often, candidates must have an existing connection with the awarding institution or provide a detailed application.
4. Reflective Commentary: A written submission (e.g., a thesis or commentary) explaining the coherence, significance, and impact of the published works.
5. Oral Examination: A viva voce (oral defense) of your portfolio and its contribution to the field

In general, awarding of the Doctorate degree requires an original contribution to human knowledge. This is typically achieved through a period of research culminating in the presentation and examination of a major dissertation on an approved subject, and may be preceded by one or more years of formal coursework on research methodology and academic writing. A Ph.D. awarded "by publication", by contrast, may not require any formal coursework and does not necessitate preparation of a dissertation. Instead, the candidate proves the past publication of several quality articles in peer-reviewed, scholarly journals which, in the opinion of the degree-granting university, represent an original contribution to human knowledge equal to that which would be demonstrated by a dissertation. Notwithstanding many PhD by Publication programs require a viva voce, and the submission of a formal thesis.

The PhD by publication may involve either the demonstration of work previously published prior to application to the program, or the achievement of publications during the period of enrollment, or some combination of the two.

Initial Application and Proposal

The candidate applies to SIMI Swiss using the doctorate by publication application form. A proposal or portfolio of their published work is required, demonstrating a significant contribution to their field. In cases where the candidate has not yet published, they will receive guidance from the supervisor as a fresh doctorate learner.

Appointment of Supervisor

After acceptance, the candidate is assigned a supervisor or supervisory team, who provides feedback and guidance in presenting the publications effectively.

Research Cohesion

Under the supervisor’s guidance, the candidate writes a critical commentary that links their individual publications into a cohesive body of work, showing how they contribute to a common theme or research question.

Participation in Advanced Research Course

During the supervision phase, the candidate will join an advanced research course designed to deepen their understanding of research methodologies and practices. This course equips them with the necessary skills to conduct high-level scholarly work, contributing to greater research cohesion.

Participation in the Global Colloquium

The candidate also participates in the Global Colloquium, where they can stay updated on the latest trends and developments in their field, network with other professionals, and meet their supervisor in person to discuss their research progress.

Regular Supervision Meetings

Along with attending the colloquium and research courses, the candidate has regular meetings with the supervisor to receive feedback on their commentary and ensure their portfolio meets doctoral standards.

Selection of Publications

The candidate selects peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, or other scholarly works that make a significant contribution to their field. The required number of publications are 5

Guidance on Publishing

After selecting the appropriate publications, the supervisor guides the candidate on how to publish their work. This includes advice on identifying suitable journals or publishing platforms, ensuring the research meets submission criteria, and addressing the peer-review process.

Defend or Revise Work

The candidate must defend or revise their publications according to the requirements of the Academic Board of Proposal. This can involve adjusting the research to meet institutional standards, integrating feedback, or revising content. Similarly, the candidate may need to edit their publications to meet the specific formatting and content standards of academic journals.

Check Quality and Contribution by SIMI Research Board

Each publication must demonstrate high quality, originality, and relevance. If necessary, the candidate may need to publish additional work based on feedback from their supervisor or after discussions at the colloquium.

Integrative Commentary

The candidate prepares a critical commentary that ties together the individual publications, explaining the methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and the collective contribution to their academic field.

Submission of Portfolio

After completing the required publications and the critical commentary, the candidate submits their portfolio for examination.

Examination Process

The portfolio is evaluated by internal and external examiners. The candidate may also undergo a viva voce (oral defense) to defend the originality and significance of their work.

Recognition and Award of the Doctorate

Upon successful completion, the candidate is awarded the doctorate from the Global University of Science and Technology (GUST).
